Old Man's Death

Artist

Ladislav Mednyánszky

Date

1852-1919

Medium

Oil on canvas

In the late 19th century and early 20th century, the Hungarian artist László Mednyánszky painted "Old Man's Death.". The painting shows an old man dying, lying in bed and surrounded by darkness. Light from a small candle illuminates the face of the man, adding a warm and eerie glow to his features. The old man is loomed over by Death, who is depicted as a black and ominous figure. As with many of Mednyánszky's paintings, this one has a haunting, melancholic atmosphere created by the combination of naturalism and symbolism. It is considered one of the finest examples of Hungarian Art Nouveau by many and is one of Mednyánszky's most powerful works.
