The Nightmare

Date

1781

Location

Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit, Michigan

Medium

Oil paint

The Nightmare is a 1781 oil painting by Swiss artist Henry Fuseli. It shows a woman in deep sleep with her arms thrown below her, and with a demonic and ape-like incubus crouched on her chest. Its evocation of erotic infatuation and obsession was hugely popular due to its dreamlike and haunting quality. I personally am a fan of the eerie nature of this painting. This is what i envision what happened when i had sleep paralysis and wasn't able to move, all while hearing my keys, that i dropped earlier moving back , and forth .
